Yangon, December 13
Major Gen. Zaw Min Tun, head of the Tatmadaw's true news team, confirmed some reports that the Tatmadaw and ethnic armed groups would meet in Mong La later this month.
As February 12, 2022 is the 75th Anniversary of the Diamond Jubilee Union Day, he told the Yangon Times that the chairman of the State Administration Council had set a policy to promote peace process and a number of northern ethnic armed groups could be included in the meeting. The peace process would be fundamentally enhanced, he added.
"What we can say at the moment is that a large number of northern groups are likely to be involved in the meeting. As 12 February 2022 is the 75th anniversary of the Diamond Jubilee Union Day, we have set a policy to step up the peace process, and in accordance with that, we will hold discussions fundamentally so as to enhance the peace process," said Major General Zaw Min Tun.
It was not clear how many ethnic armed groups would be invited to the meeting, but some sources who involved in peace process said that the northern ethnic armed groups from the Federal Political Negotiation and Consultative Committee (FPNCC) could also be included.
The Federal Political Negotiation and Consultative Committee (FPNCC) includes the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), United Wa State Party (UWSP), National Democratic Alliance Army-Eastern Shan State of Special Region 4 (NDAA), Shan State Progressive Party (SSPP), Myanmar National Truth and Justice Party (MNDAA), Palaung State Liberation Front (PSLF) and United League of Arakan (ULA).
