Key Points from the Official Visit of the President of Myanmar to Thailand, 6–7 August 2026

1. Political and Security Cooperation

◾️Both sides agreed to deepen dialogue at all levels, expand high-level exchanges and convene the Joint Commission at an early date.

◾️Defence, border and strategic-security cooperation will be strengthened through existing mechanisms, including the Regional Border Committee, High-Level Committee and an upcoming Security Dialogue.

◾️Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to peace and stability along the Myanmar–Thailand border and to improving the safety and livelihoods of border communities.

◾️Joint action will be stepped up against online scams, transnational crime, narcotics, money laundering and the financial networks supporting scam centres; Thailand also expressed support for Myanmar’s membership in the Egmont Group.

◾️Closer cooperation was encouraged between Myanmar’s Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and Thailand’s National Assembly.

2. Economic, Trade and Connectivity Cooperation

◾️Both sides will work toward a bilateral trade target of USD 12 billion and address regulatory and other barriers through the Joint Trade Commission.

◾️The reopening of the Second Myanmar–Thailand Friendship Bridge checkpoint at Myawaddy–Mae Sot was welcomed; additional border trade posts may be reopened subject to mutual agreement and security conditions.

◾️A Joint Working Group on Enhancing Connectivity is to coordinate road, maritime, port and cross-border links, including the Ranong–Myanmar port connection, coastal shipping, the Htee Khee–Dawei corridor and the India–Myanmar–Thailand Trilateral Highway.

◾️Both sides reaffirmed energy cooperation, particularly in natural gas development, and agreed to support existing and future projects that strengthen energy security.

◾️The new labour-cooperation memorandum and employment agreement were welcomed, along with the Myanmar–Thailand Business Forum and stronger private-sector networking.

3. Environmental Cooperation

◾️Cooperation will be strengthened to address transboundary haze, open burning, forest fires and water pollution.

◾️Both sides supported continued information sharing, monitoring and capacity building under the CLEAR Sky Strategy.

◾️The Terms of Reference for a Joint Working Group on water-quality management in boundary and transboundary rivers were signed.

4. Socio-Cultural, Tourism and Technical Cooperation

◾️People-to-people exchanges and implementation of the 2017 Tourism Cooperation Memorandum will be expanded, with emphasis on tourism promotion, visitor safety and sustainable tourism.

◾️The proposed Myanmar–Thailand Three-Year Development Cooperation Programme (2026–2028) will focus on health, education, MSMEs, agriculture, the environment, capacity building and human-resource development.

◾️An additional Bangkok–Yangon service by Thai Airways in the fourth quarter of 2026 was welcomed.

◾️Myanmar Space Agency and Thailand’s GISTDA signed an MoU on Earth-observation technology for disaster, agriculture and environmental management.

5. Regional Cooperation and Other Matters

◾️Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation through ASEAN, BIMSTEC, ACMECS and Mekong mechanisms; Thailand reaffirmed support for Myanmar’s ACMECS chairmanship.

◾️Thailand reaffirmed its support for Myanmar’s full and equal participation in ASEAN mechanisms and for the normalization of Myanmar’s relations with ASEAN.

◾️Thailand welcomed Myanmar’s commitment to a Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led peace process; both countries agreed to maintain close engagement at all levels.

◾️The President of Myanmar invited the Thai Prime Minister to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time.
