Myanmar exports more than 100 tones of honey to the Asia market in April, the new lights of Myanmar reported.

Myanmar Apiculture division under the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department said more than 100 tones of honey worth US$ 0.15 million in in April of the current financial year 2023-2024, according to the report.

Myanmar shipped 60.3 tones of honey to Thailand and 40.11 tones to Japan, totaling 100.41 tones.

Myanmar’s honey was exported to China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, the US and Singapore. Bee husbandry business are widely seen in Sagaing region, Mandalay region , Magway region  and Shan state, report said.

Myanmar produces variety of honey including sesame honey, jujube honey, Niger honey, Sunflower honey, lychee honey and flower honey. The harvest season of sesame honey usually begins in June.

Honey is highly used as an ingredient for making traditional medicines in the country.

State owned bee husbandry with 6,200 beehives and about 820 private own businesses with nearly 200,000 beehives operates across the country according to NLM’s report.

Myanmar annually produces about 7,000 tones of honey, with a production capacity of 70 pounds per beehive. Approximately 2,600 tones of honey are conveyed to foreign markets every year. Myanmar’s honey is priced at $1,600 per ton, report said.

More than 1,900 tones of honey were shipped to external markets in the 2022-2023 FY (April-March), with an estimated value of over US $2.8 million. Among them,  1,853.74 tones to foreign markets by sea and 63.44 tones to neighbouring countries via cross-border.
